On this winter’s night

What else to call it but a gift? And a beautiful one at that. This is "Queensborough Sunset" by our friend Dave deLang, a photographer who lives a bit northeast of Queensborough. "Looking west towards Queensborough" (presumably from his home), he explained. (Dave is not a guy who wastes words.)

Hey folks, click here for the perfect soundtrack to this short post. (And then click back to the first tab to read it while our friend Gordon Lightfoot sings.)

I slogged my way home from work tonight through dark and snow and slush, quietly wishing winter would please just go away. And then when I got home and checked the email, there was the wonderful image above, sent by our friend Dave deLang, who lives on Declair Road outside Queensborough. (It was Dave who made the great photo of the Manse on a summer morning that now hangs proudly in our living room [you can see it here], and also had sent another amazing [non-winter] Queensborough sunset photo, which you can see here.) I don’t know if Dave made this latest photo just this evening (perhaps even as I was slogging homeward), but it does make you feel rather better about winter, does it not?

Mind you, beautiful things always make you feel better about everything.

So inspired by Dave’s gorgeous photograph, let’s think about the good things there are about winter, which include: Being on the warm inside looking out at the cold (though beautiful) outside. And being with someone you love. Like Gordon Lightfoot said a long time ago: “If I could only have you near/To breathe a sigh or two/I would be happy just to hold the hand I love/On this winter’s night with you.”

Thanks, Gord. And especially, thanks, Dave.
